Driving in Portugal

To rent a car in Portugal, you just need a US driver’s license.

Be aware that when you pay for gas using a credit card, there’s often a €0.50 charge.

The national speed limit is 120 km/h on autoestradas (freeways), 90 km/h on main roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. If you get caught committing a driving offense, you will get an on-the-spot fine. Remember to keep your passport with you when you drive, as the police often check the ID of foreign drivers.

Where there are streetcars on the road, make sure to give way for passengers getting on and off.

Parking spaces in Portugal are indicated by blue road markings. For some paid parking zones, you need to obtain a blue parking disk from police stations, otherwise you can pay using a public machine. Read less
