Sandwiched between France, Holland, Germany and Luxembourg, Belgium is ideally located to explore all that northern Europe has to offer.

Famed for its lavish châteaux and rich cultural offerings, traveling through Belgium can feel like traveling through time. The former house and studio of Baroque painter Pieter Paul Rubens is in nearby Antwerp (30 miles away), while the region surrounding Brussels is home to no fewer than 15 châteaux. By renting a car at Zaventem, you can take in the local gems as well as those further afield, including the Château de Horst or the Château de Beersel. Science and technology are part of the national fabric of Belgium. On the edge of the city is the Atomium, a 100-meter-tall stainless-steel sculpture of a unit cell of an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times, constructed for the 1958 World’s Fair. The structure has since been turned into a museum, with the top dome boasting a restaurant with a panoramic view of the city and rotating science exhibits in the other domes. Named by CNN as the weirdest building in Europe, it makes for a great family day out.

Just a 20-minute drive along the E19 is the Château de Beersel. Constructed between 1300 and 1310, the castle is one of several built around the outskirts of Brussels to protect the city. Fully restored in 2003, it is now open to visitors from March until the end of November. Take a wander through the leafy gardens and along the moat and contemplate this unique Belgian relic.
