Driving in Paris

US driver’s licenses are valid for rentals in France.

In the city center, the speed limit is 30 km/h, and the Paris ring road (périphérique) has a separate speed limit of 70 km/h. The limit on autoroutes is 130 km/h, or 120 km/h in wet weather. Paris is known for its unique layout, with the city divided into 20 districts (called arrondissements) that spiral out from the city center. It is congested at peak times, particularly along the main boulevards, but the flow of traffic through the center is consistent throughout the day.

You should stay away from bus and cycle lanes, which are sometimes physically separated from other traffic.

Be aware of the many cyclists on the roads, particularly in tourist areas where they may not be familiar with the roads, and/or cycling.

Along the Seine are embankment roads (called voies sur berge) that can be used by cars when they are open; however, they are increasingly being designated for pedestrian use only.

Discover Paris and the surrounding area by car

One of the benefits of renting a car in Paris is the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas, such as the beautiful château and forest of Fontainebleau, and the inimitable Versailles and its spectacular gardens, both just an hour away by car.

If you want to explore further afield from Paris, Reims, the home of Champagne (90 miles away), the seaside resort of Deauville (120 miles) and Lille (145 miles) are all within easy driving distance.

Disneyland Paris is one of the main attractions in Europe, and boasts two theme parks, seven hotels, a golf course, and dozens of attractions including Big Thunder Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the classic Space Mountain. There is endless fun to be had, and renting a car with Europcar means you can travel there easily and in comfort. Whether you pick up your rental for an onward journey or finish at the park itself, Europcar has flexible options to suit you.

Things to see in Paris

From quintessential museums such as the Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay, to resplendent parks and riverside walks, there is so much to see and do in Paris. While the center of the city houses Notre-Dame and most of the museums, there is also a lot to be seen in the outer arrondissements. Parisian favorites, the Buttes Chaumont park, with its grottos and waterfalls, and the leafy Canal Saint-Martin and cobbled Montmartre where much of the cult film Amélie was shot, are destinations not to be missed.
