Rent a car in London with Europcar

London, the UK’s capital and one of the most popular cities in the world, needs little introduction. Situated in the south-east of England, the city is filled with endless fun and interesting things to see and do. Impressively varied architecture, the winding River Thames, stately parks, iconic shopping streets and hipster neighbourhoods are just a few of the things that attract visitors throughout the year.

With Europcar UK car rental, you can explore London on your own terms, discovering the full extent of its magic.

The Europcar car rental experience in London

With 30 Europcar stations across the city, whether you are arriving in London by plane (Gatwick or Heathrow), or train from continental Europe (St Pancras), there are convenient pick-up points to suit you. London is very spread out, so even if you are not planning on leaving the city, having a rental car can be useful for getting around.

We can help you choose a car from the Europcar fleet to suit your journey, whether you need an economy car for one or two people such as the Vauxhall Astra or Fiat 500, or a larger family model.

Europcar London offers short- and long-term car rental.

Driving in London

In the UK, cars drive on the left side of the road and signposts and speed limits operate in miles per hour.

The national speed limit is 70 miles per hour for cars on motorways (freeways) and four-lane highways, 60 miles per hour for two-lane highways, and 30 miles per hour for built-up areas. Around schools and more residential areas this is reduced to 20 miles per hour.

Parking in London can be tricky. Off-street parking is available at some underground and train stations. In most London streets parking restrictions apply between 8.30am-6.30pm, Monday to Saturday and parking is pay and display, where you buy a ticket from a machine or pay via phone. Be aware of the Red Routes (marked with double red lines) where parking, box junctions, and bus lanes are monitored.

London is always very busy but peak times include weekdays 7.30am to 9.30am and 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol, and driving while using a phone (either calling or texting) is illegal and penalties are severe.

Discover London and the surrounding area by car

Visit London and take a journey through its rich history: medieval and contemporary architecture, punk roots, ground-breaking British fashion, world-famous literature, and a multicultural food scene. Each corner of London, from the music-filled streets of Brixton to the quiet elegance of Hyde Park, to the cobbled charm of Covent Garden, is a surprising mix of old and new.

If you feel like some country air, travel in your rental car to nearby Richmond Park with its free-roaming deer (8 miles away), the prestigious university town of Oxford (59 miles), or the charming Cotswolds area (80 miles).

Around 45 minutes away by car, Windsor is an ideal day trip to discover the area around London. One of Queen Elizabeth II’s stately homes, Windsor Castle is the world’s largest and oldest occupied fortress. The exterior is pure majesty, with battlements and towers, but the inside is no less grand. Take a free guided tour (every half an hour) to see the state apartments, Queen Mary’s dolls’ house, the Prince Albert Memorial chapel, and the changing of the guard. Picnic on the river bank to complete a perfect day out.

Things to see in London

London boasts several prestigious museums, including the Natural History Museum, the Victoria & Albert, and the National Gallery, all with free entry to the main collections.

Also on your itinerary should be Trafalgar Square and its fountains, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the Shard. Old Spitalfields, Broadway Market and Brick Lane Market are a feast for the senses. If you want to get back to nature, a long walk around Hampstead Heath and its swimming ponds or a visit to Kew Gardens will be just the ticket.
