Driving in Kajaani

When driving in Kajaani, use the right hand side of the road and overtake to the left. Speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 100-120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads.

As with most Finnish cities, on-street parking is generally chargeable in the centre – you’ll need to pay at a ticket machine and then display the ticket inside your car. The rate is 1.40 euro / hour. Keep an eye on the time, as fines will be imposed if you outstay your ticket!

Petrol stations are generally plentiful in the more built-up parts of Finland but become scarcer in the north of the country and rural areas, so plan your journey accordingly.

Discover Kajaani and surroundings by car

History buffs will be in their element in this historical 17th-century town. Learn all about the origins of Kajaani and some of its citizens at the Paltaniemi Church, Kajaani Museum, Evangelic Lutheran Church, Kainuun Museum, and Eino Leino House. And after all that culture, it might be time for some refreshment – Sirius Restaurant is famous in Finland and frequented by visiting celebrities as well as tourists and locals. Enjoy delicious traditional Finnish cuisine in beautiful surroundings – a perfect end to a tiring day of sightseeing!

Want to get out on the open road? Heading out in your hire car, there is even more to see and do in the surrounding areas. If you fancy exploring a larger Finnish city, two and a half hours away is Oulu, on the west coast. To experience the essence of the city, head to the wooden town of Pikisaari, the old industrial area and now a quaint jumble of wooden buildings. The market square is another big draw in Oulu and if you plan your day so you’re here at lunchtime you’ll be spoilt for choice with so many stalls and cafes on offer. Choose the reindeer soup for a warming traditional taste of Finland!

If your trip to Kajaani is during the colder months, you can experience a magical winter wonderland in Vuokatti, just a half hour drive from Kajaani. Popular with Finns as a winter holiday resort, it can rival the more popular Lapland for stunning snowy views and winter activities. The sparkling frozen lakes, pretty snow topped trees and pristine landscape make for picture-perfect vistas wherever you look. And if you’re an adrenaline junkie, dog sledding and snowmobiling will get your heart pumping!
