Driving in Rome
In Italy, the speed limit is 130 km/h on highways, 110 km/h on main roads, and 90 km/h on secondary roads. In urban areas, the speed limit ranges from 50 to 70 km/h, as indicated by signage. Speed must be moderated according to road conditions, slowing down in the presence of narrow or steep roads, tunnels, and around densely populated areas, for example near schools.
In case of rain, speed limits drop to 90 km/h on roads outside inhabited areas and 110 km/h on highways.
In inhabited areas, parking is allowed on the right side of two-way traffic streets. On one-way streets, parking is allowed on both sides of the street, but only if at least 3 meters of free space remains for passage.
In Rome, blue horizontal and vertical signage indicates paid parking zones. The presence of white horizontal signage indicates that parking is free; pay attention to signs that may indicate a time limit for parking. Parking spaces marked in yellow are reserved for special vehicles, police, disabled, etc. On Sundays and public holidays, parking is often free.
The historic center is a ZTL () active from Monday to Saturday evening (access times vary). Only residents or those with a permit can enter this area. This area is monitored by cameras, and entering without authorization results in a fine.
For the most part, the main roads in Italy are toll highways, and the toll can be paid in cash or by credit/debit card.
It should be noted that not all gas stations in Italy are open on Sundays, and those that are open on Sundays are often closed on Mondays.

Rome is rightly known for its art galleries, historical monuments, and gelato shops, but there is much to see in the surrounding area as well. Tivoli, a 40-minute drive away, is a city in the Lazio region northeast of Rome, known for its beautiful gardens and Villa Adriana. Ostia Antica, the port of ancient Rome (also 40 minutes away), is a well-preserved archaeological site, with magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics.
Heading south, you can visit the stunning Amalfi Coast and the home of pizza, Naples (227 kilometers away). Or, to the north, awaits the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence (274 kilometers away).
If you feel like spending some time outdoors, Lake Bracciano is a perfect destination. This volcanic lake is one of the largest in Italy and provides drinking water to Rome itself! The lake is a lovely place to spend a day outdoors, and the nearby castle is worth a visit. Lake Bracciano is a 50-minute drive from Rome.
