Driving in Keflavik

As there are no trains or underground systems in Iceland, navigating the area by car is both practical and convenient. There is a paved ring road around the island accessible by any type of car. There is single lane going in each direction but as there are very few cars on the road, you should not experience any kind of congestion. Traffic jams are almost unheard of here!

People drive on the right hand side of the road in Iceland and overtake on the left as and when it is safe to do so. Beware of travelling in cold and icy conditions as the roads can be slippery. Also, take extra care in the mountains as roads are often narrow and hazardous.

When parking, look out for local signs telling you how long you are allowed to stay in the bays. Pay machines are located next to chargeable parking areas. Rural parking is often free.
