County Meath is one of the larger counties in Ireland and is home to some significant historical sites. Navan is the main town in the county and is situated at the meeting of the River Boyne and Blackwater Rivers.
Navan is the gateway to the Boyne River Valley drive, a 250km route that encompasses 9000 years of history and heritage. The Boyne Valley Drive visits some of the most intriguing attractions around Navan. Included in these are the Hill of Tara, Trim Castle, Kells High Cross, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice and Newgrange. Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb dating back to 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. It was restored to it’s original glory in the mid 20th century. There are tours available on site of the tomb. The most interesting aspect to this ancient monument is that at dawn on the winter solstice a narrow beam of penetrates the tomb opening and illuminates the passage.
Trim Castle is located on the south bank of the River Boyne and is the largest best preserved Norman Castle in Ireland. Built in the 12th century, it has stood tall through vast amounts of history. It was also used in the the shooting in the Oscar winning Mel Gibson movie Braveheart. A must see for those interested in history.
There are a number of activities for the active tourist to avail of in County Meath. the county is famous for breeding top quality horses so horse lovers will have their needs met as riding centres are dotted around the county. Golfers will also be right at home in the ‘Royal County’ as there are a variety of course dotted around the county.
Navan town has plenty to offer to tourists in the area. The town is a great shopping venue which also features an open air market every Friday. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants located in the town to soak in the Irish pub culture. There are also many scenic walks that can be started from the town.
Lovers of horse racing can view a great deal of horse racing in the area, from flat racing to steeplechases. Fairyhouse is the home of the Irish Grand National, easily the biggest race of the year.
