Van driving tips in Ireland

Driving a truck in Ireland might feel a bit daunting if you haven’t done it before. To help you on your way we’ve put together a few tips:

  • Remember that in Ireland vehicles are driven on the left hand side of the road.
  • The speed limit is 50kph in built-up areas, 80kph on regional and local roads, 100kph on national roads and 120kph on motorways.
  • Some motorways operate toll charges, and most don't take credit cards so make sure you've got some change.
  • Peak times in towns and cities can be extremely busy so try to plan your journey around these times if possible – it could help make your journey much quicker!
  • Plan your route in advance – rural roads can be narrow and some are unsuitable for large vehicles.
  • Be aware of the height of the vehicle and check it will fit under any structures such as low bridges or car park entrances.
  • A large truck may need a bit more space for turning than you’re used to – make sure you allow for this when parking and manoeuvring.
  • If you run into trouble, you can dial 112 from anywhere in Europe and an operator will connect you to an emergency service in the country you're visiting.

So now you’re prepared and your truck is loaded up you can be on your way, whether that’s just a short hop from Dundalk to Drogheda, or all the way from Sligo to Calk.
