A beautiful port city nestled on South Africa’s south-west coast, Cape Town is brimming with adventure, culture and beautiful scenery. There’s a wealth of things to see and do here and with a hire car you’ll be able to enjoy top attractions such as Table Mountain – which is easily one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks – and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens which rests on the east slope of the mountain.
Other top spots include Constantia Valley – an integral part of South Africa’s wine industry located approximately just south of central Cape Town – and how about continuing south to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point? This picturesque peninsula divides the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay and is therefore home to an array of breath-taking coastlines.
If you want to stay a little closer to the city centre, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is bustling with activity around the clock and as well as offering beautiful views of Table Mountain, you’ll also find an array of shopping centres, eateries and notable attractions such as the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Cape Town and the surrounding cities are sure to keep you extremely busy, but if you want to explore South Africa more extensively, there are numerous national parks and coastal bays to discover. You could even plan a north-easterly route up toward Johannesburg.
Driving in Cape Town
When driving in South Africa, it’s important to understand that although main roads tend to be well-maintained and signposted, smaller roads may be in poor condition. For this reason, it’s a good idea to plan your route carefully and to not go too far off the beaten track – don’t worry, many of the best places to visit see a constant flow of traffic and are easily accessible.
For safety reasons, avoid having anything of value on display even when you’re in the vehicle. Keep your car doors locked as you travel.
With regards to parking, look for official parking garages of which you’ll find plenty near main attractions like the waterfront. Beware of self-appointed parking attendants who may offer to park your car for you for a set fee.
