Roadtrip The Best Itinerary To Travel In Europe 1

There’s nothing better than the freedom of a road trip.  Getting off the beaten track in a rental car is a great way to relax and see more of Europe.

The best thing about taking a road trip in Europe is that you can tailor your itinerary. With so many amazing things to see from east to west, a European road trip is a memorable experience.

Here’s a list of Europe’s top 3 road trips:

The North Coast 500 – Scotland

The North Coast 500 in Scotland is also known as Scotland’s very own “Route 66”.  This scenic drive takes you through the wild landscapes of Scotland. The route leads you from the city of Inverness and weaves along the north coast of Scotland before looping back to Inverness.

You’ll be in awe of Scotland’s finest coastal scenery and stunning mountains. Take to the open road and explore the countryside and beautiful white sandy beaches on this Scottish road trip.

Your journey starts in Inverness heading north, where you’ll see historic castles and maybe even dolphins along the way! The route then travels along the north coast of Scotland to John O’Groats where you can see the giant Ducansby Head Stacks, a natural phenomenon which rises dramatically out of the sea. Next, drive to Thurso where you’ll find a vast stretch of unspoilt beach. You should also take the time to visit the impressive Smoo Cave with its indoor waterfall.

Following the route south, you’ll travel through some unforgettable landscapes, in particular around the village of Lochinver. This section of coastline is littered with white sandy beaches and blue seas all the way to Wester Ross.

The final stretch of your journey transports you through the Impressive Torridon mountains, past the lochs and on to Applecross. If you’re up for a challenge follow the twisting mountain road to the famous Bealach na Bà, which offers a fantastic viewpoint.

Car rental is available at Inverness airport, where you can pick up and drop off to make the most of your Scottish road trip.

Bordeaux to Bilbao

Experience Southern France and Northern Spain and travel along the wild Atlantic coastline on a mesmerising road trip.

Roadtrip The Best Itinerary To Travel In Europe 2

Starting in Bordeaux, the capital of excellent wine, you have to visit the vineyards of this region. You can also head into the city and find out why it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll also find a multitude of beaches to relax on before you begin your road trip.

The first leg of the journey takes you to the medieval village of Saint-Emilion. Why not rent a bike while you’re here and discover the vineyards and famous chateaux of the region?

Next drive south to the Atlantic town of Biarritz. This town was once the Monte Carlo of the Atlantic coast, with its grand Casino Municipal as a prominent feature. Whilst in Biarritz spend the day exploring the coast and its breathtaking views.

To experience the Basque life head inland to the countryside villages and discover the fresh produce grown at the local farms.

When you’re ready to drive to Spain head over the border to Bilbao. We recommend visiting San Sebastian, where you’ll find the beautiful Playa de la Concha (seashell beach) and some of the best restaurants in the region.

The next destination on your road trip is the beautiful Basque city of Bilbao. A must-see is the Guggenheim Museum, an iconic sight with its contemporary architecture.

Whilst in the area you should visit La Rioja, where you can enjoy an olive oil and wine tasting experience. This is one of Spain’s most panoramic wine-making regions with medieval villages and the Cantabrian mountains in the background.

To make your journey easier you can rent a car from Bordeaux and drop it off in Bilbao without having to make the return journey.

Montenegro Road Trip

Roadtrip The Best Itinerary To Travel In Europe 3

Next, is an epic road trip through Montenegro in the Balkans. Famous for its charm, this small European country has lots to offer, from the beautiful bays and beaches of the Adriatic Coast to mountains and lakes in the national parks.

This route will take you on a circle of the country, starting and finishing in Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital city.

The first day of your drive will take you southwest to Lake Skadar via Centinj (Montenegro’s former capital). Lake Skadar is stunning, and we suggest staying in Rijeka, a town with lots of royal history to explore. At the end of a perfect day, you can watch the sunset from Pavlova Strana’s viewpoint.

Then drive to Sveti Stefan stopping at Petrovac on the way. The trip will take you past stunning scenery along the coastline, which gets better the further you travel. Sveti Stefan is far less touristic than the big towns, so you can relax and explore the traditional culture.  On your way to Kotor drive the Kotor serpentine, Montenegro’s most spectacular road. On a clear day you’ll get an amazing view of the bay.

Once you arrive at Kotor you should head to the Venetian old town, a former Mediterranean port. From history to hiking, you’ll find plenty to do in Kotor.

The next destination is Perast in the Bay of Kotor. This pretty town is full of rich history, amazing views and delightful waterfront restaurants. Be sure to try some of the locals’ favourite – Perast cake, a mouth-watering almond dessert!

The last destination on your Montenegro trip takes you to Nicksic and the Ostrog Monastery. Nestled in the mountains you’ll find Montenegro’s most important pilgrimage site. The white building looks as though it’s been built into the cliff and makes a stark contrast with the surrounding rock.

This is a great last stop before driving back to the capital.

Rent a car from Montenegro airport to discover this spectacular country in your own time.
