Start off your journey with Visby the ‘City of Roses’, on Gotland’s west coast. Take some time to stroll among the city’s marvellous cobbled streets and explore its beautiful Gothic churches before heading north on route 149. If you drive for about 30 minutes, you’ll reach Lickershamn a charming old fishing harbour. The beach and the imposing cliff gazing down the chilly waters of the Baltic sea are a real spectacle. If you’re a nature lover, drive towards the south-east coast of Gotland. There, about 60 km from Visby, you’ll find Närsholmen. Known as the ‘Swedish savannah’, this natural reserve is home to about 45 species, beautiful birds and gorgeous orchids.
Fårö
The island of Fårö is a must-see if you’re staying on Gotland island. This idyllic spot is located north of Gotland. From Visby, hit route 148 and drive for about 55 km before catching the ferry to Fårö. Explore the Bjärge nature reserve the largest stack area in Sweden with hundreds of rock formations (called Rauk) all along the Digerhuvud coast. You can also stroll along Sudersand beach at the north-east of the island. If you’re a fan of film director Ingmar Bergman once a Fårö local don’t forget to make a stop by the Bergmancenter which hosts exhibits and screenings of his work.
