Joensuu may be less of a tourist draw than Helsinki or Lapland, but it has its own charms and there is definitely plenty to keep visitors entertained. If you prefer to visit a quieter and less touristy city then this is the place for you! Enjoy sightseeing around town – the Carelicum Museum, the Bunker Museum, churches and historical architecture – and venture further out of town to visit the world-famous biathlon stadium or enjoy some cross-country skiing on the many local trails.

But it seems a shame not to make the most of your hire car! Heading out of town, a two hour drive will get you to the most eastern point of Finland and the border with Russia, at Lake Virmajärvi. A rustic tree trunk monument topped with a wooden roof marks the most easterly point in Finland – and the EU - that it's possible to reach. A unique photo opportunity for all you Instagrammers!

An hour north of Joensuu is Koli National Park, a stunning area of protected parks and lakes. Hiking trails are well marked and a map can be purchased at the tourist information point, so exploring the beautiful scenery is made simple. Don’t miss the spectacular views from the top of Ukko-Koli Hill out over Lake Pielinen – climb up the steep steps to the top, or take a gentler path if you’re feeling a bit more lazy!

Driving in Joensuu

Driving in Finland is on the right hand side of the road and overtaking is on the left. Speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads. Speed limits are displayed on a round sign with a red circle outline.

In Joensuu, as with most Finnish towns and cities, on-street parking in the city centre must be paid for at a ticket machine and the ticket clearly displayed inside your car. The rate is usually 1.40 Euro / hour. Fines are 50 Euros. Outside the centre, you may find free on-street parking, and many shops have their own free car parks.

If you are driving on rural roads, beware of deer and elk crossing roads, particularly at dawn and dusk.
