Discover Stockholm-Arlanda and the surroundings by car
You just picked up your car and are ready to go? You can either play it by ear and drive along the East coast of Sweden or head straight to Stockholm - the Venice of the North - or to the ancient city of Uppsala.
The stylish capital is only 37km away from Stockholm-Arlanda airport and it is definitely worth a stop before heading on further adventures. Explore Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town, with its great waterfront views and visit Stockholm’s Royal Palace. Head to the Historiska Museet and discover the Swedish historical collection with art from the Iron Age till present times.
Uppsala is also a quick drive, only 40km away from Stockholm-Arlanda’s airport. It is the perfect example of a medieval university city with plenty of historical and cultural highlights such as its imposing 13th century cathedral, the university museum and its charming old town. Take your time to lounge in the waterside parks, cafes and restaurants.
Gotland Island
About 86km from mainland Sweden, you will find Gotland, the ‘City of Roses’ and the largest island of the Baltic sea. This truly idyllic spot is great to explore by car. 25km north of Gotland, you’ll find the medieval capital of Visby. Stroll among the city’s marvellous cobbled streets, and explore its beautiful Gothic churches as you walk along the ramparts surrounding the old town. If you head north on Route 149 from Visby and drive along the west coast for about 30 minutes, you will find a old fishing port of Lickershamn. Prepare to be enamoured by the beach and its imposing cliffs as you gaze down on the chilly waters of the Baltic sea.
You can also drive towards the southeast coast of Gotland to find Närsholmen, about 60km from Visby. Established in 1986, and known as the Swedish savannah, this natural reserve is home to about 45 species, beautiful birds and orchids. When the summer fades out into fall, the place is covered with blueweed.
