Driving in Joensuu

When driving in Joensuu, use the right hand side of the road and overtake to the left. Speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 100-120km/h on motorways, and a variable limit of between 80 and 100km/h on other roads.

As with most Finnish cities, on-street parking is generally chargeable in the centre – you’ll need to pay at a ticket machine and then display the ticket inside your car. The rate is 1.40 euro / hour. You can move to a different parking space using the same ticket as long as it has time remaining on it. Keep an eye on the time, as fines will be imposed if you outstay your ticket!

Petrol stations are generally plentiful in the more built-up parts of Finland but become scarcer in the north of the country and rural areas, so plan your journey accordingly. Most petrol stations accept credit cards.

Discover Joensuu and surroundings by car

A student city in the east of Finland, not too far from the Russian border, Joensuu may attract fewer visitors than some of the other Finnish cities, but there is plenty here to keep you entertained. The nearby lakes offer many opportunities for water sports if that’s your thing, and the surrounding countryside is also popular for walking.

But if you’re planning on using Joensuu as a base for wider travel, you can explore to your heart’s content in your hire car!

A two and a half hour drive through the gorgeous countryside of the Finnish Lake District will get you to Linnansaari National Park, with its spectacular landscape of lakes, waterways, and islands, and magnificent wildlife. If you’re lucky you might spot a rare lake seal – take one of the sunset seal safaris if you want to increase your chances!

And if you’re a bit of a history buff, 140km away is the stunning Olavinlinna Castle, dating from 475 and built to defend the Savo region from Russian attack. Its romantic setting amidst the Finnish lakes is truly breathtaking, and an opera festival, run throughout the summer months, takes advantage of this backdrop perfectly.
