Driving in Manchester

In the UK, cars drive on the left side of the road and signposts and speed limits operate in miles per hour.

The national speed limit is 70 miles per hour for cars on motorways (freeways) and four-lane highways, 60 miles per hour for two-lane highways, and 30 miles per hour for built-up areas. Around schools and more residential areas this is reduced to 20 miles per hour.

Manchester is divided into four zones. In every zone, on-street parking operates under a pay and display system from Monday to Sunday, between 8am and 8pm. There are also several off-street parking lots.

Driving in bus lanes is prohibited, except if signposts specify otherwise, and be aware that this is monitored with cameras, with hefty fines to pay if you are caught.

Like any other busy city, road traffic is heavier at the beginning and end of the working day, usually 7.30am to 9.30am and 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Driving while using a handheld phone (either for calling or texting) is illegal, and driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
