Rent a car in Malmö with Europcar

The third largest city in Sweden, the neighbourly city of Malmö is located in the southern province of Skåne and is home to more than 150 nationalities with a homely and cosmopolitan vibe. If you are a passionate about architecture and history, a fan of Nordic Noir Series “the Bridge”, an incorrigible foodie, or if you just have a creative streak, this is where you can get it all. Touted as Sweden’s marvel, Malmö is where the old joins the new, green landscapes meet the sea, and excitement mingles with serenity. This is probably why the National Geographic travel named Malmö one of its best trips of 2018.

The parks are a must-do, so take a moment to relax at King’s Park and Castle Park - two of the country’s most beautiful parks. Wander through the city’s cafés, restaurants and shops from all the corners of the world; enjoy the famous Fika break (a coffee with a cinnamon bun) in medieval square of Lilla Torg. Explore Sankt Petri gothic church or Malmö’s old castle before admiring the tallest futurist skyscraper, Turning Torso, gazing down over the Øresund bridge. If you just want to clear your head, visit Ribersborgs’ open-air bath or the city’s gorgeous sandy beaches.

Driving in Malmö

In Sweden, your headlights must always be switched on, even in the daytime, and if you drive your car between 1 December and 31 March, you should have winter tyres on your vehicle if there are winter conditions.

There are no toll roads in Sweden but you will be charged to cross the Øresund bridge that links Malmö to Copenhagen.

Even if there are several places to park in central Malmö, including a couple in the old town, it is rather difficult and expensive. You may want to consider parking at your hotel or book a parking facility in advance. Most roadside parking is paid for at ticket machines and you must display your ticket.

Discover Malmö and the surrounding area by car

Only 20 km away from Malmö, drive to Lund, the medieval prestigious university town with its beautiful cathedral, its open air museum, its winding streets, and imposing architecture.

Another beautiful destination - also very close to Malmö - is Falsterbo, a town located at the south-western tip of Sweden. Take the E22 highway, drive 32 km and discover the dunes and the iconic summer houses and villas along the beach.

If you fancy to discover Copenhagen, the Danish capital is only 30 minutes away by car, and the journey across the Øresund bridge is a delight by itself. Enjoy this cosmopolitan city and its lively bars, its gorgeous museums and its delicacies from all corners of the world.

Classic English literature’s connoisseurs may want to drive a bit further in Denmark, take a ferry, and head to Helsingør (Elsinore) to visit the Kronborg Castle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important Renaissance castles in northern Europe and was immortalised by William Shakespeare several centuries ago in its play Hamlet.

Helsingborg

Hit the E20 highway and discover the scenic coastal city of Helsingborg with its old habour, 65 km north of Malmö, in southern Sweden. Discover its old stone-built churches and climb its 600 year-old medieval Kärnan tower, the only remaining section of what was a magnificent fortress.
